Yesterday, April 23, the Alberta Health Sciences Association (HSAA), the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) and United Nurses of Alberta (UNA) negotiated an agreement with Alberta Health Services (AHS) that set out the parameters for this temporary redeployment of staff. The three unions representing the majority of AHS staff today issued the following joint statement: “We continue to consider a large number of options within our collective agreements, as we try to stop additional support for our COVID 19 response,” he said. AUPE, HSAA, UNA have negotiated an agreement with the AHS that will protect AHS members, who will be temporarily transferred to other health centres in the event of COVID outbreaks.

This agreement helps to ensure that there is a process to do the job. “By insulting Alberta nurses and refusing to delay a government plan to lay off at least 750 nurses until a new collective agreement comes into force under a new collective agreement, Mr. Toews is creating a great deal of uncertainty in the health care system.” This seems to be a fairly normal union agreement.
